STUDENTS

 

Talking Books at the State Library is a FREE Braille and audio book library for any Oregonian with a print-disability, which means a person cannot read standard-size 12pt print for long periods of time comfortably.  Eligibility for our library includes the following:

    • Legally Blindness: visual acuity is 20/200 or less in the better eye with correcting glasses, or the widest diameter of visual field subtends an angular distance no greater than 20 degrees.
    • Visual Impairment: needing aids stronger than regular reading glasses to read.  Examples include: Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, Glaucoma, etc.
    • Physical Impairment: inability to handle a book or turn its pages.  Examples include: Muscular Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, stroke, severe arthritis, paraplegia, traumatic brain injury, etc.
    • Reading Impairment: impairment in print comprehension resulting from an organic dysfunction.  Examples include: dyslexia, dysphasia, etc.

 

To register with our library, just submit a completed application.  We do not require any additional paperwork.  Applications can be submitted by: mail, fax, or email.  Click here if you have questions about a particular part of the application.



NLS Kid Zone

The National Library Service has launched a web page for children called Kid Zone.  The site offers an online search engine to locate children's books that are available from our library network.

Oregon Battle of the Books

Each year students from across Oregon participate in the Battle of the Books event, and students wtih print disabilities can enjoy reading these titles as well.  Talking Books has many of the titles on each year's list in audio or in Braille, and if we don't have a title we can help you connect with sources that do.
