A 68-year old man was seriously injured Wednesday morning after his pickup crashed underneath a flatbed semi-trailer along Highway 140E east of Klamath Falls. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation.

On January 8, 2014 at approximately 6:45 a.m., a 2000 International truck pulling two empty flatbed trailers driven by STEVE M. LANZA, age 51, from Cottonwood, California, was traveling eastbound on Highway 140E near milepost 11 when LANZA lost control. The truck and trailers rotated and slid across the highway where a westbound 1994 Chevrolet S10 pickup driven by THOMAS W. GARDNER, age 68, from Dairy, Oregon, crashed into the side and went underneath one of the trailers.

Firefighters from Klamath Fire District No. 1 extricated GARDNER from the pickup. He was transported by air ambulance to Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls with serious injuries.

LANZA was not injured.

Both drivers were using safety restraints.

OSP troopers from the Klamath Falls Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Trooper Aaron Boyce is the lead investigator.

OSP was assisted at the scene b Klamath County Sheriff's Office, Klamath Fire District No. 1, Emergency Airlift Ambulance, and ODOT. The highway was closed about 3 hours with a short detour route in place for area traffic.
