According to Sergeant Tyler Lee, on January 11, 2013 at approximately 6:07 p.m., a collision occurred on an icy section of Highway 140W near milepost 18 involving a 2000 Toyota Tundra pickup with two occupants and a 2001 Honda Passport with four occupants. The eastbound Toyota pickup crossed the centerline and was struck in the right side by the westbound Honda Passport. The Toyota came to rest on the highway and the Honda came to rest off the highway.
The Honda's 25-year old female passenger, LARISA M. BAILEY from Klamath Falls, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 34-year old female driver, KRISTI DUNCAN from Klamath Falls, was transported by air ambulance to Rogue Valley Regional Medical Center where she died. Both victims were not using safety restraints. Two rear seat adult male passengers were transported by Mercy Flights ambulance to Rogue Valley Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. They are identfied as KENNETH E. TEVALD, ae 39, from Weathersfield, Connecticut, and DENNIS J. GILLESPIE, age 23, from Klamath Falls. GILLESPIE was transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield.
The Toyota's 37-year old driver, JACOB LAYER, and his 8-year old son, JOEL LAYER, were transported by ambulance to Rogue Valley Regional Medical Center. Their injuries are non-life threatening.
With ODOT's help, the highway was closed over 5 hours for incident scene response and investigation. An OSP collision reconstructionist is assisting with the investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Trooper Adam Waldport is the lead investigator.
