An AMBER Alert was activated Wednesday morning in Oregon related to the reported kidnappinig of a 5-year old boy by an adult male following an assault in the city of The Dalles. Oregon State Police (OSP) assisted The Dalles Police Department during the activation and initial investigation that resulted in the child being recovered safe and the suspect taken into custody.
On January 23, 2013 at approximately 5:40 a.m., SKYLAR MELDIN COULCER-JARDING, age 5, was taken from his home by BRIAN LESTER DEPRIEST, age 36, after DEPRIEST went into the child's home and assaulted the boy's mother and an adult male with a hammer. DEPRIEST left with the child in a stolen 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier four-door displaying Oregon license 229 BUK.
The Dalles Police Department responded to the incident and contacted OSP to request and AMBER Alert. At approximately 7:20 a.m., an AMBER Alert was activated in Oregon and information distributed to media partners and the public. OSP established a tip line call center for the AMBER Alert tip line (866-5AMBER5).
At approximately 8:30 a.m., police officers and detectives responded to Dufur, south of The Dalles, following a tip that the suspect and child were at a specific location. The child was recovered safe and the suspect arrested without further incident.
OSP and The Dalles Police Department extends their appreciation to our media partners and the public for their interest in this case and the active use of social media to spread the word.
Background information about Oregon's AMBER Alert Program is available on our website at http://www.oregon.gov/OSP/AMBERALERT/pages/index.aspx. This was Oregon's 19th activation since the program began ten years ago. Twenty-one children have been successfully located safe during those activations.
Any additional information regarding this case will come from The Dalles Police Department and Wasco County District Attorney's Office.
