Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Tuesday morning's single vehicle fatal crash at Exit 172 off of I-5 south of Cottage Grove. The involved vehicle was a semi-truck and flatbed trailer carrying lumber.

According to Sergeant Casey Codding, on January 28, 2014, at approximately 6:39 a.m., a 2010 Ken Worth semi-truck and flatbed trailer, operated by SANTIAGO GIRON, age 49, from Phelon, California, was southbound on the Exit 172 off ramp from I-5. The semi-truck and flatbed trailer that was loaded with lumber rolled as it approached the stop sign for London Road. GIRON died at the scene from injuries sustained during the crash.

Initially first responders received information of a possible passenger associated with the semi-truck. First responders solicited the assistance of a front-end loader from Weyerhaeuser to lift the flatbed trailer off of the cab portion of the semi-truck to confirm there were no passengers.

OSP troopers from the Springfield area command are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash. It is unknown whether GIRON was wearing safety restraints.
OSP was assisted at the scene by ODOT, South Lane Fire and Rescue, Northwest Hazmat, and Weyerhaeuser personnel. The exit was closed for several hours during the investigation.
