Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputy medical examiner, is continuing the investigation into the cause of an early Tuesday morning single vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 99 south of Phoenix. With the assistance of the State Medical Examiner's Office, the victim was identified and next of kin notified.

According to Sergeant Tyler Lee, on January 29, 2013 at approximately 3:05 a.m., a 1995 Jeep Wrangler driven by MATTHEW LEE WILSON, age 24, from Medford, was northbound on a straight stretch of Highway 99 near Cabbage Lane when it traveled onto the shoulder, collided with a utility pole and then crashed into a large tree. The vehicle became engulfed in flames and WILSON, who previously lived in Ashland, was pronounced deceased at the scene after Jackson County Fire District 5 firefighters extinguished the fire.

OSP troopers from the Central Point Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Senior Trooper Tom Harrison is the lead investigator.
