Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Wednesday night's two vehicle fatal crash on Highway 20 in Benton County that resulted in the death of a Corvallis man.
On February 5, 2014 at about 9:04 p.m., a 1984 Chevrolet Blazer, operated by DOMINIC SCHLUNDT, age 29, from Corvallis, was eastbound on Highway 20 near milepost 4. A 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche operated by KYLE COOPER, age 30, from Albany, was following behind the Chevrolet Blazer. As the operator of the Chevrolet Blazer approached Merloy Avenue he slowed and the Chevrolet Avalanche collided into the back of the Chevrolet Blazer. The Chevrolet Blazer spun out of control and came to an uncontrolled rest in the westbound ditch. SCHLUNDT was ejected during the crash. The Chevrolet Avalanche came to an uncontrolled rest in the middle of the roadway. SCHLUNDT was pronounced deceased at the scene. COOPER did not suffer any apparent injuries.
Investigators believe that SCHLUNDT was not wearing a safety belt and that COOPER was wearing his seatbelt. Highway 20 was closed for several hours while investigators were at the scene.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Benton County Sheriff's Office, ODOT and Corvallis Fire.
