Oregon State Police (OSP) confirmed a second person died following Wednesday afternoon's single vehicle fatal traffic crash along Highway 199 about eight miles south of Cave Junction. The crash initially resulted in the death of an 75-year old man and critical injuries to a 65-year old woman. According to a hospital official where she was being treated, the female passenger died Thursday.
According to Sergeant First Class Jeff Proulx, on February 6, 2013 at approximately 1:54 p.m., a 2005 Dodge pickup driven by FLOYD DALE LONG, age 75, from Crescent City, California, was southbound Highway 199 near milepost 37 when it failed to negotiate a curve. The pickup crossed the northbound lane and crashed head-on into a tree.
LONG, who was using safety restraints, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Passenger SANDRA CROCKETT, age 65, from Crescent City, was transported by Mercy Flights to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford for treatment of serious injuries until she passed away.
OSP troopers from the Grants Pass work site were assisted at the scene by Josephine County Sheriff's Office, Illinois Valley Fire District, AMR ambulance, Mercy Flights, and ODOT.
