Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Monday afternoon's single vehicle fatal traffic crash that occurred along Highway 101 south of Reedsport in Douglas County.
On February 10, 2014 at approximately 1:15 p.m., a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by BRUCE NORMAN ASHTON, age 68, from Lakeside, was traveling on Highway 101 near milepost 220 between Kendall Estates Lane and Wildwood Road when it traveled off the highway and crashed into several trees.
ASHTON was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was using safety restraints and the vehicle's airbags deployed.
OSP troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are continuing the investigation into the cause of the fatal crash. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Coos County Sheriff's Office, Lakeside Rural Fire Protection District and ODOT.
Both lanes of Highway 101 were closed for over three hours with a detour in place.
