Oregon State Police (OSP) Superintendent Richard Evans will swear in 24 newly hired recruit troopers Sunday, March 17, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. before family and friends at the Oregon Public Safety Academy Hall of Heroes in Salem. This if the first group hired to start training for a career as an OSP trooper since September 2011.
"The 22 men and 2 women hired fill several openings at many OSP offices throughout Oregon. This is the first step in preparing them for the challenges they will face for what is expected to be a rewarding career helping our public safety partners and making a positive difference for our citizens and visitors," said Evans.
OSP recruit troopers go through 26 weeks of intensive academy-based training consisting of four weeks of pre-academy OSP specific training, 16 weeks of required Basic Police training, and six weeks of an advanced OSP program. Four of the 24 new recruit troopers were hired for lateral entry from other law enforcement agencies. Those individuals will participate in the first four weeks of pre-academy training and then report for field training at their assigned OSP office.
Ranging from 21 to 40 years of age, the group of new recruit troopers come from a broad spectrum of life experiences and backgrounds, including 8 with current or past military service. After successfully completing required initial training at the Oregon Public Safety Academy, they are scheduled to report to their Patrol Services Division assignment at the following OSP office locations:
* Baker City Area Command Office (2)
* Central Point Area Command Office (2)
* Government Camp Work Site
* Grants Pass Work Site
* Hermiston Work Site
