Madras Man Arrested Following Injury Pedestrian-Involved Crash in Madras

Oregon State Police (OSP) arrested a Madras man following an initial investigation into Sunday night's injury pedestrian-involved traffic crash at the intersection of 6th Street and Oak Street east of Highway 97 in Madras. Alcohol is a contributing factor on the driver's part.
Preliminary investigation indicates on March 17, 2013 at approximately 9:30 p.m., OSP was requested to assist Madras Police Department at the scene of an injury pedestrian-involved crash witnessed by a Madras reserve police officer. The female pedestrian was struck by a vehicle as she was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk with a friend. The pedestrian victim, SARA RONNING, age 36, from Madras, was transported to an unidentified hospital with serious injuries.
The vehicle's driver, GERALD E. SCHAREN, age 52, from Madras, was arrested by OSP troopers for DUII and Assault in the Second Degree. He was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail.
Jefferson County District Attorney Steven Leriche responded to the scene to assist OSP and Madras police during the investigation.
OSP was also assisted at the scene by Jefferson County Fire District #1.
