A suspicious storage case left abandoned in a stairwell near the Senate gallery side at the Oregon State Capitol led to an hour-long evacuation Tuesday morning until Oregon State Police (OSP) Hazardous Device Technicians were able to examine the contents and determine it did not contain any dangerous or explosive contents.
According to Lieutenant Terri Davie, on March 19, 2013 at approximately 9:54 a.m., OSP Capitol Mall troopers were notified that a capitol employee found a suspicious object in a stairwell near the Senate gallery. After OSP troopers confirmed the hard case object was in the stairwell, an owner was not immediately found so OSP helped coordinate an evacuation of area offices.
Hazardous Device Technicians responded, x-rayed the contents and found it contained camera equipment. The scene was cleared approximately 11:00 a.m.
The case was returned to its owner after contact with OSP.
