A Grants Pass man being treated for non-life threatening injuries at an area hospital after crashing the stolen car during a brief attempt to elude from Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers on Highway 238 near Murphy in southern Oregon was arrested Tuesday afternoon. The man was taken into custody upon release from the hospital.
On April 9, 2013, EDDIE JOSEPH CORREIA JR, age 29, from Grants Pass, was arrested by OSP and lodged in in the Josephine County Jail for Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle, Reckless Driving, and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.
According to Sergeant David Beck, on April 8, at approximately 5:21 p.m., two OSP troopers were set up monitoring traffic along Highway 238 near milepost 8 after receiving a report of a stolen 2005 Ford Mustang traveling in their direction. When the driver saw one of the troopers, he sped up and attempted to elude eastbound for about a half mile at which point spikes strips were deployed hitting at least one tire. After going over a spike strip the driver tried an evasive maneuver and lost control. The vehicle traveled across the westbound lane and overturned in a ditch.
The lone occupant, CORREIA, was transported by ambulance to Three Rivers Community Hospital for treatment of injuries. He was using safety restraints. He reportedly was involved in a couple recent eludes from area police officers. The vehicle was stolen from an area car dealership in the last couple weeks.
OSP troopers from Grants Pass and Central Point are continuing the investigation with the assistance of Jackson County Sheriff's Office. Rural Metro Fire Department and ODOT assisted OSP at the scene during a single lane closure for about 3 hours. The vehicle was towed and impounded pending the ongoing investigation.
