Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Tuesday afternoon's serious injury traffic crash that occurred at the Highway 97 and NE Jefferson Street intersection in the north end of Madras. Three people were transported to a Bend-area hospital, one of which was critically injured. Alcohol is being investigated as a contributing factor for the offending driver in this crash.
On April 29, 2014 at approximately 3:45 p.m., a Chevrolet Trail Blazer driven by JUSTIN L. MILLER, age 31, from Warm Springs, was northbound on Highway 97 attempting to turn westbound onto NE Jefferson Street. The Chevrolet SUV turned in front of a southbound commercial truck driven by RODNEY D. JANTZEN, age 61, from Artois, California. The first collision forced the Chevrolet SUV back into the northbound lane where it was struck by a second commercial truck driven by KAMALPREET S. MANN, age 22, from Yuba City, California.
MILLER and passengers GRANT SMITH, age 56, and COBY TEWEE, age 26, all from Warm Springs, were transported by air ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. SMITH was not using safety restraints and his injuries were critical. Safety restraint use by MILLER and TEWEE is pending confirmation, and both men's injuries are non-life threatening.
The two truck drivers were not injured. Both were using safety restraints.
Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Madras and Bend offices responded to the scene. Senior Trooper Clint Prevett is the lead investigator.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Madras Police Department, Jefferson County Fire District #1, Jefferson County EMS, and ODOT.
