A Snake River Correctional Institution inmate passed away Saturday, June 29, at a local hospital.

Inmate Jason Gould was transported from SRCI to a local hospital on Friday, June 28, after sustaining injuries from an assault involving his cellmate, inmate Thomas Riffenburg. Gould remained in the hospital until Saturday when he passed away at 2:04 p.m. MDT. He was 23 years old.

As with all unanticipated deaths of state prison inmates, the Oregon State Police Criminal Investigations Division is conducting an investigation. The investigation is conducted in cooperation with the Malheur County District Attorney's Office and Department of Corrections. No other details are released at this time.

Located in Ontario, SRCI is Oregon's largest prison, housing approximately 2,800 adults in custody. It provides a range of correctional services and programs, including education, cognitive programming, work-based education, parenting classes, and other work opportunities. It opened in 1991.
