A 48-year old La Pine-area man was arrested Saturday afternoon following his attempt to elude from Oregon State Police (OSP), including swimming in a river, before he was taken into custody near Sunriver. The man was arrested with the assistance of Deschutes County Sheriff's Office and other area law enforcement officers.
According to Sergeant Dave Mackenzie, preliminary information indicates on July 6, 2013 at approximately 3:11 p.m., an OSP Fish & Wildlife trooper attempted to stop a Honda Prelude for traffic violations near Sunriver. The lone adult male occupant attempted to elude the trooper through neighborhoods south of Sunriver until crashing the vehicle. The driver fled on foot from the vehicle that was later confirmed stolen.
The driver, identified as CRAIG A. MARCUM, age 48, from La Pine, swam in an area river to escape and was eventually found by a Deschutes County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit hiding in a shop building.
MARCUM was taken into custody and was undergoing a medical evaluation pending lodging in the Deschutes County Jail. Pending charges are Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle, Misdemeanor Attempt to Elude on Foot, Burglary in the Second Degree, and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree.
OSP was assisted during this incident by Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, Sunriver Police Department, US Forest Service Law Enforcement, and La Pine Fire & Rescue.
