Oregon State Police, with the assistance of Sherman County Sheriff's Office, is investigating a multi-vehicle traffic crash along Highway 97 between Kent and Shaniko that has resulted in the death of two people.
Preliminary information indicates on July 10, 2013 at approximately 2:45 p.m., a collision involving two commercial trucks and a passenger vehicle occurred on Highway 97 near milepost 51. The two occupants in the passenger car were pronounced deceased at the scene. The two commercial truck drivers were not injured.
The highway is closed and there is no estimated time for reopening. An alternative route is Highway 197 north and south. Traffic updates can be monitored on ODOT's website www.TripCheck.com.
OSP troopers from The Dalles Area Command office are investigating the cause of the crash. Assistance at the scene is provided by Sherman County Sheriff's Office, Moro Rural Fire Protection District, North Sherman County Rural Fire Protection District, South Sherman Fire Protection District, Sherman County Ambulance, and ODOT.
No additional information will be released until this evening or Thursday. An update news release will be sent when more information is available following the scene investigation.
