A 66-year old man jumped to his death Friday afternoon off the Rex T. Barber Veterans Memorial Bridge shortly after two Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers arrived and tried to talk him from jumping. The incident response and recovery partially blocked the northbound lanes of Highway 97 until the man's body was recovered about our hours later.
On July 12, 2013 at approximately 2:49 p.m., OSP Northern Command Center dispatch received information from Deschutes County 911 of a vehicle stopped on the bridge with its door open. Two OSP troopers arrived about sixm inutes later and encountered a man standing near the bridge railing. As the troopers tried talking to the man, he let go of the railing and fell to his death.
The man was identified as a person reported to an Oregon law enforcement agency as missing and suicidal.
Recovery efforts were handled by Crooked River Ranch Fire & Rescue and Jefferson County Search & Rescue personnel. ODOT handled the partial lane closure until the scene was cleared about 6:45 p.m.
