Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into the cause of an early Friday morning single vehicle traffic crash northeast of Florence involving a pickup that traveled off Upper North Fork Road and landed in a creek. The crash resulted in the death of a 23-year old male and minor injuries to a female.
According to Sergeant Alan Gilbert, on July 26, 2013 at approximately 3:00 a.m., OSP and local emergency responders were notified of a single vehicle traffic crash along Upper North Fork Road near milepost 3 involving a pickup that left the road and landed in a creek. A female passenger had gotten out of the pickup, made her way back up an embankment and walked along the road until she flagged down a passing motorist.
Upon arrival on scene, emergency responders confirmed there was a male inside the pickup that was lying on its side in the creek. RONALD MARK CATALFAMO JR, age 23, from Florence, was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was not using safety restraints.
Preliminary investigation indicates a 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by CATALFAMO was southbound on Upper North Fork Road. For an unconfirmed reason, CATALFAMO lost control and the pickup traveled over an estimated 40-foot embankment where it came to rest on its driver side in a creek.
The female passenger, NICHOLE K. WELLS, age 21, from Florence, was transported by Western Lane Ambulance to Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence for treatment of minor injuries. Initial investigation indicates she was using safety restraints.
OSP troopers from the Florence and Springfield offices are continuing the investigation into the time and cause of the crash. Senior Trooper Justin Goldsmith is the lead investigator.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue.
