One person died and three others in an ambulance received minor injuries Wednesday afternoon in a head-on crash on Clear Lake Road near Green Hill Road northwest of Eugene near the airport. The highway is closed for the investigation with a detour in place.
Preliminary information indicates on July 31, 2013 at approximately 12:15 p.m., a Eugene Fire & EMS ambulance occupied by two paramedics and one patient was eastbound on Clear Lake Road when a westbound sport utility vehicle with one occupant crossed the centerline. The ambulance driver couldn't avoid the oncoming vehicle and they collided head-on.
The female occupant of the sport utility vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her name will be released later after confirmation of next of kin notifications.
The two paramedics and patient in the ambulance were transported by another ground ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with non-life threatening injuries. Their names are not available for release at this time. The ambulance was on a non-emergency transport with no lights or siren activated.
Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Springfield Area Command office are investigating the cause of the fatal traffic crash.
OSP is assisted at the scene by Lane County Sheriff's Office, Eugene Police Department, Lane Rural Fire Rescue, Eugene Fire & EMS, and ODOT.
More information will be released when available. No photographs available at this time.
