Oregon State Police (OSP) and the Medical Examiner's Office are investigating the discovery of a decomposed hand found Friday evening on a Gearhart-area beach in Clatsop County along the tide line north of the Del Rey Beach access.

According to Trooper Dennis Thomas, on August 2, 2013 at approximately 8:45 p.m., a retired police officer walking along the beach with his 9-year old granddaughter reported finding the decomposed remains of a hand near the high tide line. They moved the body part away from the approaching water before contacting OSP so it wouldn't wash back out into the ocean.

A search of the surrounding area turned up no additional remains.

The Clatsop County Medical Examiner will do further follow up next week. No other information to be released at this time.
