An examination Tuesday by the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office of what was believed-to-be a decomposed hand found Friday evening on a Gearhart-area beach in Clatsop County was determined to be a the remains of a seal's flipper.

On August 2, 2013 at approximately 8:45 p.m., a retired police officer walking along the beach with his 9-year old granddaughter reported finding the decomposed remains of a hand near the high tide line. An OSP trooper responded to the scene, removed and secured the part until it could be taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office for confirmation. The found object initially appeared to be decomposed remains of a hand inside a glove.

An Astoria Police detective took the part Tuesday to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Clackamas where it was confirmed to not be human.
