A Portland-area man died this weekend following a Saturday evening traffic crash on Highway 99E south of Canby. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation.
On August 10, 2013 at approximately 8:06 p.m., a 2002 Subaru Legacy four-door station wagon driven by LAYNE JASON IFFERT, age 21, from southeast Portland, was northbound on Highway 99E near milepost 23 when it crossed into the southbound lanes. The Subaru collided with two southbound vehicles and then overturned in a ditch on the west side of the highway.
Canby Fire District personnel responded to the scene and extricated IFFERT from his overturned vehicle. He was transported by LifeFlight air ambulance to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) where he reportedly died Sunday morning, August 11.
The other two drivers were identified as MERRILL WAYNE RALSTEN JR, age 54, from Woodinville, Washington, and STEVE A. KOUTNY, age 57, from Hubbard. RALSTEN was not injured. KOUTNY was transported by ground ambulance to Meridian Park Hospital with minor injuries.
OSP troopers from the Portland Area Command office are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash. Safety restraint use is also pending confirmation.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Canby Police Department, LifeFlight, AMR ambulance, and ODOT.
