OSP Trooper Finds Missing 22-Month Old Boy Missing From Lane County Campground

A joint search effort Thursday evening ended joyfully for a family when their 22-month old boy was found safe after being reported missing from a remote campground southeast of Cottage Grove in Lane County. 

On August 30, 2012 at approximately 6:28 p.m., Lane County Sheriff's Office received a report of a missing 22-month old boy who was camping with his family at Rujada Campground southeast of Cottage Grove near the community of Disston.  Several families and children were recreating when the boy wandered off.  When the parents and other campers noticed the boy was missing, they began searching the area around the 15 campsites near Layng Creek.  Another camper left the campground to find cell phone service and called 911.
Four forest deputies, a Search and Rescue deputy, and Lane County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue volunteers responded to assist with the search.  Two Oregon State Police troopers also responded to assist.  By the time the first responders arrived, the child has been missing for approximately an hour.
At approximately 7:52 p.m., OSP Fish and Wildlife Trooper Ed Imholt found the missing child in the brush along a trail.


Lane County Sheriff's Office would like to thank Oregon State Police for their efforts in helping to locate the missing child and reuniting him with his family.  Lane County Search and Rescue reminds those recreating outdoors to keep an eye on small children and to call for help if you notice your child is missing.  In remote areas, first responders can be several minutes away; the sooner you call for help the sooner we can arrive to assist you.
