A two vehicle crash on Highway 97 near Chemult occurred late Friday morning resulting in the death of both driver's. A surviving passenger with critical injuries was taking to St. Charles Medical Center by air ambulance. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Bend Area Command and LaPine office are continuing the investigation.
On August 30, 2013 at approximately 11:09 a.m., a 1989 Jeep pickup driven by KENNETH C. FRAZIER, age 44, from Gilchrist, was southbound on Highway 97 near milepost 200 and attempted to pass a southbound commercial motor vehicle in a no passing zone. A northbound 2005 Chrysler van driven by EARL R. JOHNSON, age 73, from Lake Havasu City, Arizona, attempted to avoid the Jeep pickup but was unable to and both vehicles collided on the northbound shoulder of the highway.
FRAZIER and EARL JOHNSON were pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. A female passenger in the Chrysler van, JOANNE JOHNSON, age 71, from Lake Havasu City, sustained critical injuries and was transported by AirLink air ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
(OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation and do not believe that alcohol contributed to the crash. All occupants in both vehicles were wearing safety restraints. The highway was completely closed for nearly 2 hours.
No photographs for release at this time. Names of all involved will be released at a later time.
(OSP) was assisted at the scene by ODOT, Chemult Rural Fire Protection District, and AirLink.
