Fatal Traffic Crash - Highway 82 west of Wallowa
One person died and a second was critically injured Monday morning when their passenger car collided into the side of two flatbed trailers along Highway 82 in the Wallowa County. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into the cause and manner of the crash.
According to Sergeant Jason Stone, on September 3, 2012 at approximately 6:03 a.m. a 1995 Peterbilt truck pulling two flatbed trailers loaded with PVC pipe driven by BRUCE BARTON, age 61, from Winnemucca, Nevada, was eastbound on Highway 82 near milepost 35 negotiating through a curve when westbound 2009 Toyota Camry four-door collided into the sides of the flatbed trailers. The impact was in the area of the centerline of the highway. After impact, the Toyota came to rest on its top along the highway shoulder and the truck's driver stopped to check on the other vehicle's two occupants.
The Toyota's driver, KEITH LAWRENCE SMITH, age 73, from Las Vegas, Nevada, was critically injured and initially taken to Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Washington. He reportedly has been transferred by air to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. His wife/passenger, NORMA H. SMITH, age 81, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both were using safety restraints. They were visiting relatives in the area.
BARTON was not injured.
OSP troopers from Enterprise and La Grande are continuing the investigation.
Wallowa County Sheriff's Office, Wallowa Fire & Rescue, and ODOT assisted at the scene. The highway at the crash scene was closed for several hours.
