Suspect Found Deceased Following Standoff With Police at Reedsport Hotel

A standoff between police and a suspect sought for questioning in a police investigation ended Wednesday afternoon when Oregon State Police (OSP) SWAT team members found the man deceased inside a Reedsport-area hotel room. The death investigation will be completed by Reedsport Police Department and preliminary information indicates the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Prior to 12 noon on September 12, 2012, law enforcement officers from Reedsport Police Department, Oregon State Police, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, and Coos Bay Police Department secured an area around the Fir Grove Motel located at 2178 Winchester Avenue as they negotiated with a man inside one of the motel rooms. A school near the motel was placed on lockdown while officers worked to resolve the situation.

During the afternoon, officers attempted to contact the man inside the room and as they entered he fired one shot from a firearm so officers retreated. No officers were injured. Highway 101 was closed in both directions and the OSP SWAT team was requested to respond.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., OSP SWAT team members entered the hotel room and found the man deceased. The man's name will be released by Reedsport Police Department because they are the lead investigating agency.
