One person was killed and a commercial tr uck driver received minor injuries Sunday evening in a fatal traffic crash along Highway 20 east of Vale in Malheur County. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Ontario Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor on part of the deceased driver.

According to Lieutenant Mark Duncan, on September 15, 2013 at approximately 7:40 p.m., a 1998 Pontiac four-door driven by TEODORO CRUZ RAMIREZ, age 41, from Vale, was eastbound on Highway 20 near milepost 255 when it crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a 2006 International truck pulling a semi-trailer driven by SERGEY S. LEVKO, age 31, from Woodburn.

CRUZ RAMIREZ was extricated from his car by Ontario Fire & Rescue firefighters. As he was being transported to a hospital, he was pronounced deceased before arrival.

LEVKO was transported by ground ambulance to St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario for treatment of minor injuries.

Before the crash was reported, OSP troopers were trying to locate the Pontiac after citizen reports of a possible DUII driver operating the vehicle.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Malheur County Sheriff's Office, Ontario Fire & Rescue, Vale Fire & Ambulance, Treasure Valley Paramedics, Oregon State Fire Marshal Region 14 HAZMAT Team, and ODOT. Trooper Kim Waddell is the lead investigator.

Highway 20 at the scene of the crash was closed over two hours with a detour in place for area traffic.
