OSP Capitol Mall Area Command

(503) 986-1121

On Thursday September 20th at approximately 2:30 PM an Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant noticed a suspicious package that arrived via regular US mail at OSP-General Headquarters at 255 Capitol St. NE in Salem. Capitol Mall and Salem Area Command Troopers responded and a building evacuation was initiated. Capitol St. was closed directly in front of the building between Court St. and Chemeketa St.

The entire Public Service Building was evacuated. Approximately 600 people are employed at this location.
The OSP Explosives Unit was summoned and later determined that the package did not contain any explosives material. The building was reopened shortly after 4:00 PM. Capitol St. was reopened at about 4:20pm. (It had been closed for about 1.5 hours.)
The package was a prepaid US Mail box about 8"x10" in size.
Salem Police Department personnel assisted at the scene with OSP Patrol and Explosives Unit Troopers/Dectectives. Members of the National Guard Civil Service Team also responded to assist.
OSP-Salem Area Command Major Crimes Detectives continue to follow-up on this incident.
