Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into a Friday night shooting during a reported disturbance at a Merlin-area residence in Josephine County. One person received non-life threatening injury and OSP is asking for the public's help to find the homeowner who left the scene before officers arrived to investigate.

According to Lieutenant Darin Lux, on September 20, 2013 at approximately 11:30 p.m., OSP troopers and Criminal Investigations Division detectives responded to the reported disturbance and shots fire at 6160 Monument Drive near Merlin. Preliminary investigation indicates several adult males drove to the trailer residence and made contact with the owner, DENNIS ALLEN SMITH, age 65.

A conflict ensued and at least one shot was fired. One of the adult males outside the trailer identified as MATTHEW ROY BARBOSA, age 31, from Grants Pass, was struck in the leg and taken to Three Rivers Hospital in Grants Pass for treatment.

When troopers and detectives arrived at the scene, all involved parties and SMITH had left the scene.

OSP is requesting the public's assistance in locating SMITH to learn his version of the incident. Anybody with information regarding his current location is urged to call OSP Southern Command Center at 541-440-3333.

Detective Jess Elzy is the lead investigator in this case.
