A Springfield man is facing numerous charges following Tuesday afternoon's two vehicle serious injury crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 north of the Brownsville interchange. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Albany A rea Command office are continuing the investigation after the driver was cited and released on the charges while being treated at a hospital.
On September 24, 2013 at approximately 4:17 p.m., a 1995 BMW four-door driven by AARON L. BROWN, age 28, from Springfield, was northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 220 when BROWN lost control on the wet pavement. The BMW crossed through the center median and came to rest in the southbound left lane where it was struck in the left side by a southbound 2004 Oldsmobile Alero driven by CURTIS FOGELQUIST, age 57, from Eugene. Both vehicles came to rest in the southbound lanes.
BROWN and his passenger, JOLENE POWELL, age 34, from Veneta, were extricated by Halsey Shedd Fire Protection District firefighters. After removing BROWN, a concealed firearm was found on his person and secured for evidence. Both occupants were transported by Albany Fire Department ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with serious, non-life threatening injuries. Neither person was using safety restraints.
FOGELQUIST and his passenger, JOSEPH BERTRAND, age 41, from Eugene, were also transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with minor injuries. Both were using safety restraints and their vehicle's airbags deployed.
Initial investigation led OSP to cite BROWN to appear in Linn County Circuit Court for the following charges:
* Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants - Drugs
* Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance - Methamphetamine
* Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
* Assault in the Fourth Degree
* Driving While Suspended
OSP was assisted at the scene by Halsey Shedd Fire Protection District, Albany Fire Department, and ODOT. The left southbound lane was closed for about one hour.
Lead investigator is Trooper Tiffany Lynn.
