According to Sergeant Robert Fenner, on September 28, 2012 at approximately 4:57 p.m., a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by RODERICK DARRYL WASHINGTON SR , age 63, from Los Angeles, California, was southbound on Highway 97 near milepost 271 when it pulled to the southbound shoulder to make a u-turn. When the motorcycle entered the southbound lane of travel it collided with a 2000 Kenworth commercial truck driven by HECTOR DIAZ RIVERA , age 53, from Los Angeles, California.
WASHINGTON was transported by Klamath County Fire District 1 to Sky Lakes Medical Center with serious injuries. After he was stabilized, an air ambulance flew him to Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland.
The motorcycle's passenger, DIANE DENISE BOWDEN, age 43, from Euless, Texas, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both were wearing helmets.
DIAZ RIVERA was not injured in the collision. He was wearing his safety restraints.
OSP troopers from the Klamath Falls Area Command are continuing the investigation. No enforcement action has been taken at this time.
OSP troopers were assisted at the scene by the Klamath Falls City Police Department, Klamath County Fire District 1 and ODOT. The highway was completely closed for over 3 hours as traffic was diverted around the collision scene on a secondary road.
