Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation to confirm the cause of the death of a 59-year old Umatilla man early Saturday morning along Highway 395 near Hermiston. Preliminary information indicates the cause may have been due to a medical emergency while the man was driving, but confirmation will be made in conjunction with follow up by the medical examiner.
On October 5, 2013 at approximately 3:00 a.m., a passing motorist reported a 2005 Chevrolet Impala was in the sagebrush about 60 feet off Highway 395A near milepost 2. The driver, RODNEY NORMAN MARKS, age 59, from Umatilla, was unresponsive, slumped over in the driver's seat. Hermiston EMS was dispatched and shortly after arrival confirmed MARKS was deceased.
Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was southbound on Highway 395, traveled off the highway and through sagebrush before coming to rest on a hillside. The vehicle had no visible sign that it crashed before coming to an uncontrolled stop.
OSP troopers from the Pendleton Area Command office are investigating. Trooper Ryan Sharp is the lead investigator.
Umatilla County Sheriff's Office and Umatilla Police Department assisted at the scene.
