A commercial truck driver was cited by Oregon State Police (OSP) Saturday after a trailer with a heavy load struck a bridge abutment and went down an embankment along Interstate 84 about 35 mile east of Baker City. The trailer came to rest in the Burnt River and its load, a windmill base, came to rest on the east side river bank.

According to Lieutenant Mark Duncan, on October 6, 2012 at approximately 9:34 a.m., OSP troopers from the Ontario Area Command office responded to a commercial motor vehicle crash on Interstate 84 near milepost 339 eastbound. A 2007 White Western truck hauling a windmill base was traveling eastbound at approximately 50 mph when it entered a left sweeping corner. The trailer struck the guardrail, damaging about 100 feet of railing before hitting a bridge abutment and going over an embankment toward Burnt River.

The trailer came to rest in the river and the windmill base loaded on the trailer came to rest on the east side river bank. A small grass fire developed but was extinguished by Huntington Fire Department personnel.

The truck's driver, BRIAN NAPIER, age 35, from Marysville, Indiana, was not injured and the truck was drivable. He was using safety restraints. OSP cited NAPIER for Failure to Drive Within a Lane.

The highway was not blocked. ODOT personnel responded to the scene to assess damage and coordinate removal of the trailer and load.  The tow company was to be on scene for an extended period of time removing the trailer and windmill base.
