Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into the cause of an early Thursday morning fatal traffic crash along the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 about seven miles west of Hood River. The crash resulted in the death of the male driver and critical injury to the passenger.
On October 17, 2013 at approximately 3:36 a.m., a 2007 Honda Civic two-door driven by TIMMY TRUANG, age 18, from Portand, was westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 55. A witness reported the car nearly rear-ended a commercial truck and trailer when TRUANG lost control and the car, from Portland, and across the lanes into the Wyeth Weigh Station truck scales and crashed into the back of a parked semi-trailer.
TRUANG was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was using safety restraints.
Passenger ERIC TYLER SMITH, age 18, from Portland, was critically injured and transported by ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition. He was not using safety restraints.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Hood River County Sheriff's Office, local fire and medical responders, and ODOT.
