A 24-year old Albany man was arrested Thursday by Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers after he fled a traffic crash scene on Interstate 84 and later stole a construction company's vehicle at Biggs Junction. The suspect was arrested after the victim company tracked their vehicle using GPS to where troopers found it parked at a rest area east of Mosier.
According to Sergeant Les Kipper, on October 17, 2013 at approximately 9:40 a.m., OSP responded to a traffic crash report westbound on Interstate 84 near Biggs Junction. On arrival, two vehicles were found to be involved in the non-injury crash but only one driver was at the scene. While at the crash scene a man stopped and inquired with OSP where "Logan" was. The man said he works with "Logan" and was wondering if "Logan" was OK after seeing the car involved in a crash.
At approximately 10:00 a.m., Sherman County Sheriff's Office received a report of a stolen Ford F550 truck with "Green Kerr Construction" sign on the door taken from the Biggs Junction area. As an OSP trooper was getting onto Interstate 84 at the east end of The Dalles, OSP Northern Command Center dispatch said the stolen vehicle was being tracked by the victim company and GPS coordinates indicated it was westbound from The Dalles.
At approximately 10:13 a.m., OSP was notified the stolen vehicle was slowing near the Memaloose Rest Area at milepost 73. Two troopers pulled into the rest area and spotted the stolen vehicle parked with a male standing in the back wearing a blue hard hat. As the male - later identified as LOGAN ANDREW LAWRENCE, age 24, from Albany - jumped out of the back of the truck, the two troopers took him into custody after he briefly resisted arrest.
LAWRENCE was lodged in the Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility (NORCOR) for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Fail to Perform Duties of a Driver Involved in a Traffic Crash, and Probation Violation. He was also cited for Driving While Suspended.
The pickup was released back to the victim company.
