Update: 2nd Person Dies Following 10/17/13 Fatal Traffic Crash - Interstate 84 west of Hood River

Oregon State Police (OSP) was notified Saturday by the Multnomah County Medical Examiner that the passenger critically injured in an early Thursday morning fatal traffic crash along the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 about seven miles west of Hood River died at a Portland-area hospital. OSP is continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash.

Passenger ERIC TYLER SMITH, age 18, from Portland, was transported after the crash by ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center where he was treated for injuries until his death. He was not using safety restraints.

On October 17, 2013 at approximately 3:36 a.m., a 2007 Honda Civic two-door driven by TIMMY TRUANG, age 18, from Portland, was westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 55. A witness reported the car nearly rear-ended a commercial truck and trailer when TRUANG lost control and the car, from Portland, and across the lanes into the Wyeth Weigh Station truck scales and crashed into the back of a parked semi-trailer.

TRUANG was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was using safety restraints.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Hood River County Sheriff's Office, local fire and medical responders, and ODOT.
