The investigation by Oregon State Police (OSP) Criminal Investigation Division detectives and Marion County District Attorney's Office into Sunday night's fatal Salem police officer-involved shooting investigation is continuing.
The person shot by police is identified as CHASE HAMMER, age 27, from southeast Salem.

The incident began October 21, 2012 at approximately 6:26 p.m. when a female called to report a despondent male, CHASE HAMMER, was in possession of a gun threatening to kill himself.  According to an earlier Salem Police Department news release, police officers responded to the residence in the 3700 block of Scenic View Drive SE to locate the despondent male and check on his welfare.

After officers arrived and were searching the area, they encountered an armed man outside the residence. During the encounter, Salem Police Corporal Ryan Demmer shot the armed man at approximately 7:53 p.m. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Salem Police Department requested OSP detectives conduct an independent investigation, which is standard procedure in this type of an incident.

No other information to be released until the investigation is completed and/or authorized by Marion County District Attorney's Office.
