Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Wednesday night's traffic crash along Highway 101 just south of Waldport that seriously injured a Yachats-area man after his vehicle crashed into trees and a power pole. The highway was closed about two hours during incident response and power company repairs before one lane was opened.
On October 23, 2013 at approximately 11:25 p.m., a 2001 Dodge Durango driven by DOUGLAS W. JOHNSON, age 51, from Yachats, was southbound on Highway 101 near milepost 158 when it traveled off the highway, up an embankment and collided with several trees and a power pole. The impact broke the power pole causing power lines to hang low across the highway. The sport utility vehicle came to rest on its top off the highway amongst several trees.
Emergency personnel from OSP, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Central Coast Fire & Rescue, Yachats Rural Fire Protection District, South Lincoln Ambulance, and ODOT responded to the scene.
JOHNSON was transported by ambulance initially to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport and later to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis.
Preliminary investigation indicates alcohol is a contributing factor. Senior Trooper Bryan Fitch is the lead investigator. Enforcement action is pending.
