Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into the cause of an early Friday morning fatal traffic crash at the intersection of Highway 99W and Highway 36 near Junction City. One person died, one person was seriously injured, and a third person received minor injuries.
On October 25, 2013 at approximately 6:40 a.m., a Dodge Caravan driven by BRIAN D. COLE, age 43, from Sandy, Oregon, was southbound on Highway 99W when it was involved in a collision at the intersection with Highway 36 with an Acura Integra occupied by two people. The Acura was traveling eastbound on Highway 36 when the collision occurred.
COLE was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The Acura's 55-year old male driver, JAMES CHARLES RICHMOND, and 55-year old wife/passenger, BARBARA M. RICHMOND, both from Coos Bay, were transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend. JAMES RICHMOND was pronounced deceased at the hospital. BARBARA RICHMOND is being treated for serious injuries.
All three involved people were using safety restraints.
OSP is continuing to investigate to confirm which vehicle had right of way at the intersection that is controlled by electrical signal lights. Trooper Kyle Bachmeier is the lead investigator.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Lane Rural Fire/Rescue, Junction City Police Department, and ODOT. The highway was partially closed for 3 hours during incident response and investigation.
