A Myrtle Point-area teenager died Saturday when the car she was driving traveled off Highway 542 (Powers Highway) and struck a tree north of Powers near Coquille Myrtle Grove State Park in Coos County. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation.
On October 26, 2013 at approximately 12 noon a 1996 Honda Accord four-door driven by MINERVA NERI, age 17, from Myrtle Point, was eastbound on Highway 542 (Powers Highway) when it traveled off the roadway and struck a large tree on the right front corner of the car. NERI was not using safety restraints and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
OSP troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are continuing the investigation. High speed is a possible contributing factor. Trooper Joshua Mullins is the lead investigator.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Coos County Sheriff's Office and Myrtle Point Fire Department.
