Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Thanksgiving evening's crash on SE 82nd Avenue between SE Boyer Road and SE Causey Avenue involving a pickup and a pedestrian. The pedestrian died after arriving at a Portland-area hospital and the vehicle's driver has cooperated with the investigation.
On November 22, 2012 at approximately 6:25 p.m., a male pedestrian identified as MARGARITO DIAZ GUTIERREZ, age 29, from southeast Portland, was trying to cross SE 82nd Avenue from the west to east side on foot between intersections when he was struck in the right hand northbound lane by a 2001 Ford F150 pickup. Traffic at the time was described as heavy.
DIAZ GUTIERREZ was seriously injured and transported to Oregon Health & Science University where he died later that evening. Failure to use a crosswalk, heavy traffic, darkness and dark clothing, and alcohol are all possible factors. Next of kin in Mexico and California were notified.
The pickup's driver, KEITH S. ERDMANN, age 68, from northeast Portland, was not injured. He remained at the scene and cooperated with investigating troopers.
Traffic was reduced to one lane in both directions during the investigation.
OSP troopers from the Portland Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Trooper Cameron Bailey is the lead investigator.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Clackamas Fire District 1, and ODOT.
