Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Tuesday evening's pedestrian-involved fatal traffic crash that occurred on Highway 51 south of Highway 22 in Polk County.
According to Sergeant Tim Plummer, on November 26, 2013 at approximately 6:20 p.m., SARAH LOU MULLER, age 74, was struck by a vehicle along Highway 51 south of Poplar Lane. MULLER, with aid of a walker, was attempting to cross Highway 51 when she was struck in the northbound lane by a 1996 Jeep Cherokee driven by ANGELICA HERRERA-CLARK, age 21, from Gervais. Conditions were dark and there is no overhead street lighting at the location where MULLER was struck in front of her residence driveway.
MULLER was taken by ambulance to Salem Hospital where she died after arrival.
OSP troopers from the Salem Area Command office are investigating the crash. Preliminary information indicates MULLER may have been crossing the highway in the dark while looking for a lost cell phone.
No citations have been issued.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Polk County Sheriff's Office, Polk County Fire District #1, Keizer Police Department, and ODOT. The highway was closed about 3 hours during incident response and the investigation.
