Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of Coos County-area law enforcement agencies and local citizens, arrested a wanted man trying to hide in a building following an attempt to elude in a vehicle on Coos Bay area streets.
On November 26, 2013 at approximately 4:06 p.m., an OSP trooper attempted to stop a Cadillac passenger car with 3 occupants for a traffic violation in a Coos Bay residential area. The driver failed to yield and then attempted to elude the trooper at a high rate of speed. The trooper backed off and attempted to keep the car in sight as it was driven recklessly. The trooper lost sight of the Cadillac as it approached Highway 101, but several citizens pointed the trooper southbound where it was last seen traveling.
At approximately 4:15 p.m., Coos Bay police and OSP found the Cadillac in a McDonald's restaurant parking lot in the 700 block of S. Broadway where the occupants abandoned it and ran away on foot. Additional police officers from Coos County Sheriff's Office, North Bend Police Department, and Coquille Tribal Police responded to the scene to assist with a search.
While officers were searching the area for the 3 occupants, a citizen notified them that a person was inside a secured Industrial Source building in the 500 block of S. Broadway. As officers arrived they saw a man trying to break out of the building and then run upstairs.
Police officers secured the exterior and then gained access inside to search for the man with the assistance of a North Bend police canine. As officers were searching, they heard noise in the upper level and then saw a section of the ceiling break open. The police canine fell through to the floor and landed at a trooper's feet. Shortly thereafter, another section of the ceiling broke open and the male suspect fell partially through when officers grabbed him and took the man into custody at about 6:30 p.m.
The male suspect was identified as RALPH J. CAGLE, age 32, from Coos Bay. CAGLE was wanted on 3 outstanding warrants for Parole Violation, Theft in the Second Degree, and Fail to Appear. In addition to the warrants, he was later lodged in the Coos County Jail also for Burglary in the Second Degree and Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree. Additional charges may be pending as the investigation continues.
The other two vehicle occupants have not been identified at this time.
