A northeast Portland man was arrested late Wednesday night after he crashed while attempting to elude an Oregon State Police trooper in the area of SE Division east of Interstate 205. The suspect crashed into a power pole before being arrested with the help of area witnesses and Portland Police Bureau officers.

On January 14, 2009 at approximately 11:37 p.m. Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Brandi Zeckman attempted to stop a 2006 Chrysler 3000 four-door for failing to travel within a lane and an unsignaled lane changed southbound Interstate 205 at the Division Street exit. The car continued about 40 mph on SE Division to SE 101st where it turned right and drove about 50 mph down a dead end street. The trooper was approaching the dead end area when the car made a u-turn and drove towards the patrol car.

The trooper moved to the right side of the road as the car sped past at a high rate of speed and the trooper lost sight of it.

Upon turning around and trying to regain sight of the car, the trooper saw smoke coming from the area of SE 101st and north of SE Division in the 2300 block. Upon driving up to that area the trooper saw the car had struck and sheered a power pole, hit two unoccupied parked vehicles and overturned onto its top. The driver was gone from the overturned car.

With the help of witnesses who had called 9-1-1, the suspect was found minutes later on SE 104th Avenue at SE 104th Court.

ROBERT JOSEPH GILLIAM III, age 29, from northeast Portland, was taken into custody. He had minor scratches and was first transported to Portland Adventist Hospital for a quick medical evaluation and then to Multnomah County Jail where he was lodged for Felony Attempt to Elude, Reckless Driving, Misdemeanor Attempt to Elude on Foot, and Hit and Run with Property Damage. He was also cited for Driving While Suspended. Additional charges may be pending.
