Cable barriers are credited with preventing a commercial truck from completely crossing the center median of Interstate 5 and being involved in a serious crash Thursday morning in Wilsonville.
On January 17, 2008 at approximately 11:04 a.m. a 1996 Freightliner truck driven by JOHN KETTERER, age 53, from Fairview, was southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 285 in the far right lane. Witnesses stated the commercial vehicle abruptly veered to the left at about a 45 degree angle and into the center median cable barrier system. The commercial vehicle almost drove into the northbound lanes. As it continued southbound in the center median it nearly tipped onto the driver's side before coming to a stop in the center median.
According to Oregon State Police Trooper Chris Schinnerer, the vehicle drove approximately 600 feet after crossing into the median and the cable barrier probably kept it from tipping and rolling into oncoming traffic.
Trooper Schinnerer cited KETTERER for Careless Driving.
Approximately 300 feet of the cable barrier system, including wire and metal posts, was damaged.
ODOT assisted at the scene. Questions regarding the cable barriers should be directed to ODOT.
