Oregon State Police (OSP) arrested a Newberg-area man early Sunday morning for DUII after he crashed into a stationary Sherwood Police Department patrol car on Highway 99W in Sherwood. The Sherwood police officer was transported to an area hospital for treatment of a possible minor injury.
According to OSP Trooper Scott Kinch, on January 17, 2010 at approximately 1:47 a.m., Sherwood Police Officer JEFFREY FITZPATRICK, age 44, was seated in his stationary 2008 Ford Crown Victoria patrol car on the southbound side of Highway 99W near milepost 15. A southbound 1998 Toyota Avalon driven by PAUL D. McGIVERIN, age 29, from Newberg, was traveling approximately 45 mph when it drifted onto the shoulder and crashed into the back of the patrol car.
Subsequent investigation by Trooper Kinch led to the arrest of McGIVERIN for DUII. He was lodged in the Washington County Jail.
FITZPATRICK was transported by Metro West Ambulance to Meridian Park Hospital for treatment of possible injury. He was released after an examination. Questions regarding Officer FITZPATRICK should be directed to Sherwood Police Department.
Both were using safety restraints.
