A Bandon-area woman died Friday afternoon when the vehicle she was driving and lost control on an icy/shaded stretch of Highway 42S east of Bandon and collided with a dump truck.
According to Trooper Jeff Walker, on January 25, 2008 at about 12:44 p.m. a 1992 Geo Tracker driven by MARION GISELA BEHRENS, age 62, from Bandon, was eastbound on Highway 42 near milepost 7.5 when it lost control while negotiating a right hand curve and crossed the center line. The Geo Tracker collided with a westbound 1985 Kenworth dump truck driven by MARTIN JUSTIN GRUELLE, age 54, from Bandon.
BEHRENS was pronounced deceased at the scene.
GRUELL was not injured.
Both drivers were using safety restraints.
Conditions were sunny at the time of the collision; however, due to the corner being shaded, the roadway in that area was icy.
Oregon State Police troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Speed is a possible factor.
Assistance at the scene provided by the Bandon Police Department, Coos County Sheriff's Department, Coos County Medical Examiner's Office, Bandon Rural Fire Protection District, and the Oregon Department Of Transportation.
The highway was restricted to one lane of traffic during the investigation.
