A Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge was one of three people seriously or critically injured Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle head-on crash Sunday afternoon on Highway 26 east of Sandy.

According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Senior Trooper Duane Larson, on January 25, 2009 at approximately 4:45 p.m. a 2006 Nissan Frontier pickup driven by CRAIG G. GILBERT, age 63, from Brightwood, was eastbound on Highway 26 near milepost 30 negotiating a left curve when it lost control. The pickup crossed into the westbound lanes and collided nearly head-on with a 2007 Subaru Legacy four-door driven by ERIC J. BERGSTROM, age 47, from Portland. After impact, the Subaru came to rest on its top in the westbound ditch and the pickup came to rest on its wheels on the west side of the highway at the Cherryville Road intersection.

GILBERT was critically injured and transported to Oregon Health Sciences University. He was using safety restraints.

ERIC BERGSTROM may have been ejected from the Subaru as he was found on the pavement. He was transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with serious injuries.  He is a circuit court judge in Multnomah County.  (http://www.ojd.state.or.us/mul/Judges/Bergstrom/index.htm)

His two children passengers were also injured and transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital. Right front passenger MICHAEL A. BERGSTROM, age 12, was seriously injured. Right rear passenger SARAH E. BERGSTROM, age 15, received minor injuries. All were believed to be using safety restraints.

Highway conditions were icy. The crash location was just west of the Cherryville Road / Weber Road intersection where the center cable barriers were installed a couple years ago.

OSP troopers from the Government Camp work site are continuing the investigation. Sandy Fire Department, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office and ODOT assisted at the scene.

Westbound lanes were closed about 90 minutes.
