OSP Recruit Troopers Receive Awards at DPSST Basic Police Class No. 308 Graduation

Oregon State Police (OSP) recruit troopers assigned to the Ontario and Tualatin offices received awards today as they joined 33 other graduating police recruits representing state, county, and city public safety agencies in Oregon. The graduation marked the conclusion of 16 weeks of integrated basic police training for twelve OSP recruit troopers, eight city police officers, and fifteen county sheriff officers from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) in Salem which provides statutorily-required training.
OSP Recruit Trooper DAVID ARMSTRONG, age 27, who is assigned to the OSP Ontario Area Command office, received two awards during the graduation ceremony:
* The first award was for selection as the recipient of the Victor G. Atiyeh Outstanding Student Award, the highest honor that a student can receive from DPSST. This award is named in honor of the former distinguished governor of the state of Oregon, in whose term of office the current academy became a reality. This prestigious award is presented to the outstanding student of each basic class as selected by their fellow students and the academy staff. The student selected must display exceptional professionalism by demonstrating an exemplary attitude and outstanding achievement in leadership, academics, health & fitness and survival skills.
* The second award was for selection as the recipient of the Outstanding Health and Fitness Award presented to the student who excels in the area of physical fitness and health, enabling them to perform the jobs of providing emergency services to others while serving as a role model for other public safety professionals.
OSP Recruit Trooper NIGEL SCHNACKENBERG, age 28, who is assigned to the OSP Tualatin worksite, was selected as the recipient of the Defensive Tactics Award presented to the student who excels in the area of defensive tactics by displaying exemplary skill in control and arrest tactics, verbalization, and professionalism while performing a myriad of training scenarios.
